What is Music Therapy?
Music Therapy is built for individuals to learn, explore, grow, develop, and succeed in all areas of their life through the support of engaging in fun and dynamic experiences designed by a trained professional.
As defined by the American Music Therapy Association, “Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music therapy interventions can address a variety of healthcare & educational goals and many can benefit from music therapy services”.
In short, it is a practice grown through meticulous research that has provided evidence for how music interventions can support a wide variety of needs when administered by a credentialed professional who excels in the combination of music and therapeutic support.
How can you know if Music Therapy will benefit you or your loved ones?
The amazing thing about music is that it is engrained in the very fabric of the human experience.
Every person has a connection to music in one way or another; whether it be dancing to their favorite tune, singing with friends and family on a holiday, a special song that reminds them of their beloved, or even the simple heartbeat within themselves.
Music is everywhere, and music is fun!
When it comes to learning, re-learning, or maintaining skills the work that is needed can be daunting; Music Therapy provides an engaging and safe environment to succeed.
4 Ways to Know if Music Therapy is Right For You
- Your loved one loves music!
This one is easy! Let’s say your loved one lights up when their favorite song comes on, you’ve noticed they don’t use words to communicate but they do sing, or they use whatever is nearest as a drum; they may benefit from Music Therapy because this practice takes their interest and utilizes it to support growth in other areas.
- Your loved one already receives other services
Music Therapy is great on its own, and pairs well in tandem with other services. Because we’re not focusing on “music” skills, the actual goal will be similar to what they may be addressing in Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or other wonderful services already, and can be tackled from a different angle and perspective.
- Your loved one needs a creative outlet
Expressing thoughts and feelings is hard enough with words. Music Therapy provides an avenue for self-expression and emotional processing that doesn’t rely on verbal communication. We can facilitate an experience that allows for the exploration and expression that every heart needs.
- YOU want to celebrate successes for your loved one, big and small!
